2018-2019 Honors points

09/12/2018: Freshman meetings with Dr. Dodson:

On Wednesday the 12th, I attended a small group meeting with Dr. Dodson to review the honors handbook and answer any questions we may have. So far, I am definitely looking into study abroad for this summer, and maybe undergraduate research in years to come!

09/10/2018: E-portfolio Set-Up:

Today Dr. Thibodeux and I set up my online portfolio. I hope by doing this I am able to keep up with everything I do in college through honors college, softball at Lamar, volunteer and community engagements, and my major! I am nervous about keeping up with everything and making my site look appealing. I am aiming for the best as I know this portfolio will help me in the long run.

09/29/2018: Touring Hampshire college in Amherst, Massachusetts:
Today I got to walk around the various spaces of Hampshire college and learn about their college set-up. Everything here is very different than a traditional 4-year college. It is set up into "div 1, div 2, and div 3." Essentially, div 1 is our equivalent to basics classes, div 2 is equivalent to our major specific classes, and div 3 is like a specialty or concentration. The entirety of div 3 is spent doing student lead research projects, and every student will graduate with a liberal arts degree specializing in whatever the div 3 project was. One of the projects a student did was remodeling and furnishing a section of the library to take on the artistic means of a specific author he enjoyed (picture below). The whole weekend was a very cool way to lean about other models of learning, and actually made me very thankful for the guidelines Reaud honors college has to ensure we become well rounded students with endless opportunities as well!

10/05/18: The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time:

Today I got to watch the LU performance of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time at the university theater. It was performed at the small black box space with a fabulous cast, amazing staging, and brilliant projections and lighting. I definitely enjoyed getting to watch this production and was impressed by the job done by Lamar theatre!

10/10/18: Zen Museum

In Morris hall today there was a "zen museum" set up where we had the opportunity to make stress balls, do yoga, throw away our worries, color, listen to relaxing music, and make new friends in our hall!

10/ 24/18: Study Abroad Fair

Today I attended the study abroad fair on campus to see the new release of programs for summer 2019! I am not certain on which study abroad I will do, but so far I really like the idea of the Geography in Iceland program.

1/20/2019: Volunteered at our Lamar Softball camp to work with aspiring college players!

02/02/19: Volunteered at "meet the cardinals." This was a community event open at no cost to any young kids and fans wanting to interact with Lamar softball and baseball players! It is always a great reminder to remember why you play, and that there is always someone younger looking up to you.

02/06/2019: I had the opportunity to speak with Dr. Thibodeaux to a group of peers about the benefits of having an eportfolio, as well as my personal experience with the starting and keeping my own EP.

03/08/2019: I was able to start work with the eP advisory committee by editing and submitting a proposal to present the benefits of an ePortfolio next year at a convention in New Orleans!

04/24/19: I attended the non-profit board matching event hosted by honors college. I look forward to being a part of the stepping up program and what it has to offer. I will select my top few choices and hope they selected me as well.

05/15/19: It was an honor to be asked to be a guest speaker at the NHS luncheon hosted by Reaud Honors College. I had the opportunity to speak about the benefits of having an ePortfolio as well as hear Dr. Thibodeaux and Dr. Dodson's presentations. I hope local high school chapters will be able to start utilizing an ePortfolio platform based off our luncheon.

06/21/19: I took a trip out to the ag barn in Alvin to see all the new animals, as well as my sisters cow, Paisley.

08/13/19: Today I started my journey as a volunteer at Texas Methodist Hospital in Houston. I am really excited that they are allowing me to be on their team as they are such a high ranking and prestigious hospital. While today I just did 2.5 hours of various office work, I look forward to expanding on this and being able to continue to give back to the medical community in the future.

06/01/2019-Ongoing!: Over the summer, I joined the nonprofit company, Crisis Text Line, as a Crisis Counselor. It has definitely been a rewarding way to spend my time, and a unique outlet as a volunteer. I feel like this is something I was good at to begin with, but with the training CTL provided I feel very confident as a true counselor. While I am certainly no where near done with this company, here is an update of the conversations I am fielding as a crisis counselor. (currently around 25 hours)
